Heathkit IP-32 HV Power Supply

Owned · Active deep-dive target Power supplies — vintage (HV regulated bench) Vintage Heathkit (~1968 — solid-state regulated HV bench supply, replaced the earlier IP-17)

Overview

The IP-32 is Heathkit's late-1960s regulated tube-circuit lab supply: simultaneous 0–400 V B+ (~100 mA), 6.3 V AC filament (4 A), and –100 V negative bias. Front-panel metering for B+ voltage and B+ current. Series-pass regulator using 6L6 / 12AX7 / 0A2 (regulator tube). The defining utility is being able to **design and breadboard tube circuits at the bench** without needing the entire power-supply section of a chassis built first.

Context

Heathkit's tube-era lab supplies (IP-17, IP-32, IP-2717) were the bench supplies in countless university and industrial labs through the 60s and 70s. The IP-32 is the smaller-output sibling of the [SP-2717A](../Heathkit%20SP-2717A%20HVPS/CLAUDE.md); pick the IP-32 for single-tube experiments and amp-stage breadboarding, the SP-2717A for full-chassis-equivalent loads. Common service issues: the regulator tube wears out and B+ regulation drifts; electrolytics in the filter / reservoir need recap; the meters may need re-zeroing.
